San Francisco, CA (May 3, 1999)—The National Film Preservation Foundation (NFPF) today announced the award of film preservation grants to seventeen archives across the U.S. Among this year's winning projects are an American-produced travelogue of Stalin's Russia; newsreel outtakes of women aviators from the 1920s; the 1962 industrial short Shoes on the Move; and Verdict: Not Guilty, a social commentary on the U.S. justice system by African American filmmakers in the late 1920s.

"These films are windows into a world not found in history books. They provide a view of the changing face of the Twentieth Century and the rich diversity of the American experience," observed Fay Kanin, Chair of the Library of Congress' National Film Preservation Board, who served on the grant review panel.

Through the Partnership Grants Program, the NFPF links nonprofit and public archives with commercial laboratories donating preservation services. These grants of services target films made outside the commercial mainstream and fund the creation of both preservation masters and access copies.

"We are awarding grants to seventeen archives across the country—in Utah, South Dakota, Nebraska, and seven other states and the District of Columbia," said NFPF Board Member John F. Cooke, Executive Vice President, The Walt Disney Company. "The momentum is growing. Film preservation is becoming a national movement."
