Anthology holds one of the largest collections of avant-garde cinema—approximately 11,000 films and 3,000 videotapes. While worldwide in scope, the collection focuses on American filmmakers and includes many industrial and commercial negatives deposited at Anthology by insolvent films labs. Anthology presents some 700 public screenings yearly, publishes catalogs and books, and is committed to preserving avant-garde film. Founded in 1970, the Archives is an independent, self-supporting institution.
